Andrássy road 61.


The Andrássy road is a 2310 meter  long avenue of VI. district in Budapest, which runs through the Terèzvàros. The road connects the Downtown to the Vàrosliget.

The Andrássy Avenue with the Millennium Underground Railway which is going underneath, and with the Hero's Square which is situated at the back of the avenue, together in 2002 became the part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Terézváros’s main artery was the  Kiràly Street in the 19th century, it was connecting  the outer areas, the Downtown and the Vàrosliget.  Although in the Kiràly Street even tram has traveled, because of  it’s narrow lines by the mid-century was no longer able to serve the increased traffic.  In addition, Terèzvàros crowded district  is built to shut off the natural flow of air, thus making difficult the already unhealthy and crowded part of town position.

Remedy the problem raised by Count Andràssy Gyula Prime Minister  the new plan of a constructionof a new avenue. The building of the new boulevard began in 1871, the road was opened on the 20th of August 1876 in a ceremony.  At first Avenue was called, and in 1885 was named after Count Gyula Andrassy. As the Millennium celebrations (1896) approached, the unresolved problem of the public transport towards Vàrosliget  came to the fore again. Then Balazs Mor (the Budapest Municipal Electric Railway CEO) following the suggestion of Andrássy Avenue during the construction of an underground railway was decided that two years is ready to further enhance the prestige of the new decorative Avenue.

The building designer was Petschacher Gustav (1844-1890).The  Austrian-born designer came to Budapest as an architect of the French-German-Hungarian interest Avenue Construction Company Consortium. The house plan was made in 1880. The building and the adjacent school building (Andrássy road 63-65., HRSZ: 29466) plan came out from under the hand of the designer at the same time.
